I received a note from a POE Participant some time back, and thought I should put up my response to the question “how do I handle multiple priorities?”
Here’s the exerpt of my reply:
Your experience is not different from anyone else who has responsibilities. I think the most important thing we have is to choose whether we want those inadequacies to keep improving us, or to shut us down.
When you have a whole host of things clamoring for your attention, what do you want most?
I started off running my own businesses by looking at things that I could focus on and the things I did not need to focus on. Over time, I realize that there are some things that we must focus on even though we don’t want to.
"Conscientious Organizing" is the concept I would use to create this priority over things. I'm not the most organized person in the world. Still, with that limitation, I also have learnt that putting the attention where it matters is what matters.
During the first few weeks of the business, it was easy because the drive was there and the focus was clear - get the business off and running. There were many areas where I could say I was successful, such as planning, proposals and the like. However, I always ended up neglecting something.
The problem then was that I did not have a conscientious awakening as to what I ought to be paying attention to. As a result, my relationships suffered a great deal, and I didn't have the ability to have 'third person objectivity' anymore. I felt easily irritated and didn't stop to think about my emotions before they happened.
All that changed when I had about 5 minutes alone. It was quiet, on a Sunday morning, and I was in the office. The first question that came up was: "What am I doing in the office on Sunday?"
That time, I had many good reasons for it. The reasons were for higher values such as friendship, freedom for the future, pride in my work, etc. rather than need to get my work done, have to keep my job, etc.
Over time, this reflection faded into the background because I did not focus on it. Later on, I discovered that my reasons were missing. At points of time where I had to get work done, I was literally going on automatic pilot and forgetting the things that were really important for me. Career seemed to selfishly take over the rest of my life.
As a result of that, I had to stop and take stock. I realize that conscientious attention being paid to each and every item in my life is important to start off the day. I realize that (even up till now) I put off many things if I don't deal with it NOW, especially the small things.
It's a challenge having to do all these things at one go. But I think it's worthwhile considering that (1) we have many things to do, (2) some things mess up our original plans, (3) we have to reschedule.
What this means is that we need to (1) know what we are supposed to do and the focus on the right reasons for it, (2) understand the things that clamor for attention and how to flexibly prioritize and have a great way to manage that, (3) a mental scheduling system that will get us going every day.
(1) Know what you are supposed to do.
I think this is fairly standard. It gives you greater control when you can see and feel what you are supposed to do for the day. I think no one should ever have to be uncertain about what they have to do. Nowadays, there is great software in Outlook that allows you to synchronize your schedule easily. With palm devices, all this can be managed at our fingertips.
I highly recommend quiet time to get away from the 'noise'. 5 minutes of reflection and planning won't take too much time. I allude to the old adage 'if you fail to plan, you plan to fail'.
(2) What are the important Values areas that affect my life today?
This exercise you did in assessing your values. What is it that is important in your life? For myself, the things that are important include gathering or creating knowledge (I can lose sleep for this), friendship (I enjoy it very thoroughly when I get to meet up with friends and have little nice discussions), and money (this is a means value which helps me fulfill the other two values).
So, there are several categories of Values you need to pay attention to:
- Family
- Friends
- Career
- Health
- Spirituality
- Lifestyle
I guess you can sub-categorize them as you want, but each of them carry a very important part of our lives. Do you know what they are? Sometimes, some people end up focusing a lot on the things that they like. I for one, never really paid much attention to lifestyle as a goal. It wasn't until I found out how much (real $ amount) it was costing me by not paying attention to my expenses that I started to become 'conscientious' about it and made sure that my focus was locked in there.
One of the secrets I have discovered is that instead of just tipping the balance all the time (one day jogging, one day career, one day spouse...), if I pay attention to each area for just 30 minutes a day with my full heart and soul, I feel much freer.
The other thing is called 'dovetailing'. When you know you have to pay attention to your spouse and your health, what do you do? You go jogging together, or some kind of exercise that helps maintain your health. Is it possible to dovetail three or more things at the same time? You're a smart guy, so go figure! ;)
(3) Mental scheduling system
There's a concept known as 'time distortion'. We use this all the time, but we have no conscious control over it. Unless we are trained, of course. By speeding up your thought processes and focusing on the inside, you generally slow time down on the outside because you are moving faster than anyone else. Sometimes, the opposite occurs (waiting in a queue) where time seems to stand still. By stretching time, you can have more time.
Also, I think if things happen to get in the way, you just have to find ways to optimize the amount of time you have. It's about the creative ways we do things and get many things done at the same time.
Your question is simple, yet, there are profound implications. I think the reality of the situation is that few people actually pay that much attention to the obvious. The fact you are starting to be conscientious about this shows that you are already beginning to gain better control.
In sum:
1. 30 minutes a day in all key areas of your life.
2. Plan what you need to do by first knowing what to do (intent and outcome).
3. Taking distractions and weaving them into your plan (dovetail).
4. Mentally schedule and rearrange your tasks effectively.
I'll probably touch up my thoughts and arrange it in a modeling report, since you have triggered my neurons. :)
Let me know if this helps!

I’ve chatted with a past POE participant, and in my opinion, he has a very strong moral ethic and also a really spiritual individual. I also get a sense that for many people, the concept of material success has virtually faded out of the minds of some people. Why? Because they see little point in it.
To a number of people, material success is nothing more than a move backward in life, especially if they don’t know what to do with that material success. How many times have you wasted money? I know I have, and sometimes still do. But beyond money, how do we grow as individuals, as people who are seeking some form of ‘enlightenment’?
I don’t mean to be religious here – I only believe that we can be ‘good’ people. If we can learn to do that consistently every day, I trust that our lives should get better every day. Interestingly, even if our lives don’t get better, they give us signals – that some of those signals tell us more than we expect. They show us a mirror to look and reflect even more deeply into the patterns in our life, and ask us “is there something here to pay attention to? What would you need to do to have a better life?”
Reflections. That’s what I think blogging is for me. To get a piece of my mind into a written form and preserve it for the future, so that I might understand what I felt at that time, and learn about myself and my thoughts.

I was surfing “NLP in Singapore” and I found this funny and inaccurate comment on the internet. It said

Well, unfortunately, the person who wrote this was inaccurate because I was the first person to run NLP trainings under the name TransNeuro-Technologies in 1997, and before that, my training partner was Jerry Low, a licensed NLP Trainer from Dr. Richard Bandler, and the first Singaporean to train in NLP. He was licensed in 1996. So someone got their facts wrong somewhere.
Do you know where the REAL longest standing NLP training is? Right here in AKLTG. It is a place where I took NLP and with Adam Khoo, brought it to a different level. That’s why we have an excuse to say that we are the most popular NLP trainers in

Never heard of Stephen Pierce, have you?
This guy is an unbelievably innovative marketer, and not to mention, one of the world’s top internet marketers. You ought to check out the kind of production quality he has at www.stephenlive.com.
One thing about Stephen Pierce is that I see leadership in the way he does it. In fact, if you were to learn to model a skill, it would be innovation. You have to learn how to create new ideas and make them work in any industry. The spark often gives way to a huge experience that leads to either cost savings, productivity, or an increase in profits or revenue. You have to understand what this does for business growth and development.
In my opinion, never before have I considered it useful to just ‘follow the leader’. I know that it is essential for individuals to have a role model, but are we just modeling the wrong things? Steve gave me some idea about the way marketing can be done. Most marketers fail to realize that copying (a cheap excuse for what they call modeling) doesn’t work. You end up with too many variables, leading to a crunch in your ability to really produce results. You need to surge forward with a much more dynamic approach to thinking about your customer base.
In the next few months, you will begin to see how excellence in business building can create a really powerful sense of personal freedom. And it’s not about internet marketing. It’s the way to innovate and generate solutions for people. ‘Thinking out of the box” is a thing of the past because there are so many people who use that phrase who have absolutely no idea what it really means.
Thinking systemically is a more appropriate term – you have to look at various places and spaces within the mind of the customer and use that to create results. The power in your brain is the power to make things happen. Processes can be thought through – you merely need the strategy to get things moving and really take action on what you already know could work.

It’s important (well, at least to me), and it’s one of the most significant days of my life because I’ll be revealing a totally brand new approach to internet marketing that few people know about. Why is it so significant? Wait when the bell strikes 12 on the 21st of October.

Gambling. Is it entertainment, or is it habit?
Whatever the case, I have to acknowledge that it is a great way to earn revenue, and a great way to get people talking about things. I consider this a great way of viral marketing (see, even I am talking about it).
Beyond that, I also want to get everyone to consider the implications of gambling in our society. I’m not just talking about the ills of gambling. I’m referring to the way it affects us. First, let me return back to the question – is it entertainment, or is it habit?
If you treat gambling as entertainment, but are obsessed by it, it probably has become a habit. Be very wary of obsessions and the way it drives you. It’s fine if you are obsessed by a goal and strive to reach toward it, but make sure that gambling doesn’t turn into an obsession.
Frequently, if an obsession begins to affect you, you will need to start changing the way you perceive the pleasures from that obsession. The reason why most people have great control over themselves is because of delayed gratification. It’s a concept in EQ which I read about a long time ago in the book by Harvard Researcher, Daniel Goleman called “Emotional Intelligence”. It is a recommended read.
The behaviors that we engage in should not lead us to a negative mindset. I know most people turn an obsession into a string of disappointments, leaving them unhappy and despondent. Once in a while, it is important to maintain the observer’s position and start to think about what exactly we are doing and reflect on the consequences of our actions.
In NLP, we suggest that it is important to do something called a ‘future pace’. This process gets us to think about the future and consider the various pathways to the consequences of our actions. If you imagined spending $500 on gambling, think what might happen if you continued to do this over the next 5 years, every day of your life. OUCH!
Anyhow, another set of patterns that are frequently mentioned by Adam can be found in the Wealth Academy program that Adam and I jointly run. If you have to be obsessed, be obsessed with saving money and re-investing it in places that make sense. Watch how $500 a day, instead of being gambled, can blossom into a HUGE savings and retirement plan for you. Those of you interested in creating a proper life plan should look at some life planners who can do the job for you. Highly recommended source, my own financial advisor and financial disciplinarian, Lorraine. J

I read incredulously at Frank Kern’s $370,000 in 9 minutes.
It was unbelievable, yet, I know the man is capable of that.
I don’t promise that much (yet), just a decent four-figure income on the side. I mean, US$1,500 is a decent deal for most of us, rather passive income.

I read with some measure of disgust at reading the news today – temples being torn down and destroyed by violence. Even a monk was “hacked to death”. This brings to mind a couple of things. First, violence may appear to be evil to us. But the irony is that the more you dislike violence, the more it draws your attention. The more it draws your attention, the more you start looking out and focusing on it. It teaches a lesson that for violence to be eliminated, we need to stop pushing back. While this might be counter-intuitive to the typical thinking that surrounded decisions like the

Second, I was having a conversation with my friend Chris Ng. He’d just been to India and UK on a company trip, and one thing he told me was most people in Singapore wouldn’t know what luxury of life they are living if they didn’t go overseas where taxes are 40% of income, where you can’t find a decent place to buy your clothes and the like.

Have you ever had a conversation about something where someone suddenly became offended at what you said? I encountered that, and it was hilarious. For some of you, you know the joke I tell about the professor who crossed the river and victimized the boatman? Someone came up to me today and told me that I should stop telling that joke because there might be Ph.D. holders in the audience.
I was curious to see that someone with such a high level of education couldn’t tell the difference between a joke and a sarcastic comment. From my own perspective, EQ is severely lacking in this person. Or anyone who can’t take an honest joke. I mean, someone may deliberately crack a joke to irk someone, but I’ve never found someone who had a successful family, interpersonal career and wasn’t able to handle a joke. I’ll bet if that person gets to read my blog, this person will probably complain to the government and ask for my arrest or something. Sheesh.
Look – I’ve had tons of Ph.Ds in my audience, who are now close friends. Many of them have great careers and a wonderful reputation. And they laugh at this joke. If you can’t handle an honest joke (I mean, I’m discounting those targeted to destroy people’s feelings), you need to take a good close look at yourself and change your perspective. So, I’m sorry you were hurt when I wasn’t shooting you.
It looks like a neurosis… they call it a hallucination.
In any case, over sensitivity… is it something in our genes? Past lives? Habits? I’ve always learnt that different people react to things differently. I feel that with whatever flaws we have, we must never lose our sense of humor. In reality, oversensitivity appears to be a protection mechanism that has not been updated. I mean, it’s like your computer firing up an anti-virus message not just for real threats, but for every email that comes through.
Such experiences are highly indicative of poorly fostered self-esteem. I was told yesterday at another preview that Albert Einstein was a genius but a terrible parent. So much for high IQ paving the way to your success, yes?
If you have a great self-esteem, you create a great environment for people to be around you. I remember moments where I felt terrified sitting next to a depressed person. It just felt so negative. At the same time, someone with a poor self image is activating really huge amounts of “away-froms” even though the threat isn’t even there. It’s a perceived threat.
It reminds me of the time when a friend told me that someone we mutually know called me names behind my back. He claimed I was arrogant and pompous. Well… when someone makes a judgment about me like that, it probably means he hasn’t got much information about me. At the same time, I recognized that he could easily perceive me that way. Rather than being upset, I kept an open mind and gave him the chance to know me better. That way, I ended up being more than just ‘pompous’. He had better descriptions about me after our next meeting, and being friends is far better than being enemies.
To consider if you are truly humble, you’ll be able to take this litmus test – when people tell you you’re wrong, you agree you are wrong. When people poke fun at you, you poke yourself too. When you find that something sensitive has been breached, you’ll peel that layer away to find out what you have been hiding and stop hiding behind a false front. Then and only then will you get a sense of what it means to be human and release emotional baggage that shouldn’t be due to you.

It has come to my attention that most people are lazy in the things they should do, and hard working in the things that they should not do. For instance, I ran a workshop on learning once and had to hand hold the participants to literally even take out their pens (complained they didn’t have pens, when all they had to do was to bend down to get their pencil case from their bags).
Another instance is when people start up businesses. They want the idea, the process, and everything else. When the business stops working, they blame the idea and the plan that was sold to them. Huh?! Helloo… people… it’s time to start making ‘sense’ here. It’s astounding. No wonder there are so few millionaires.
Someone called me up on the phone yesterday night and said he had been fired. I said congratulations, it is either the saddest or happiest day of his life. He said ‘saddest’. I said why? He said ‘because I lost my job’. I asked again – why were you fired? And he said the loud and emphatic, ‘I don’t know. They said I wasn’t performing well enough, but they didn’t tell me what I was supposed to do!’
Duh.
In any organization, you’ll have to make sure that you know what is expected of you. If it is vague, do something and check back if what is being done is according to expectation, then surge forward in that direction. I told him ‘You deserve to be fired’. I hate to hear grown men cry. >o)
Anyway, he snapped out of it after that, so he acknowledged he wasn’t really being a star player and just wanted to keep a low profile.
What is the psychology of laziness? I know I’m lazy in some things – I procrastinate running when I know I ought to keep fit for the year’s IPPT, I know I have to clear up my desk (it’s a mess). But where certain matters are concerned, I get massively obsessed with it and generate a huge amount of learning so that I can create value. It’s an interesting skill – derived from accelerated learning. I think more people could do with being able to be an expert in an area within 3 months or less. Heh… maybe I’ll write a book on that.

Some people made the comment that my blog was really personable and stuff. I found it ironic that I am more personable on the internet than in person… :p
In any case, I think that most of my personality lies deep inside, so unless you ask me a question, you won’t really have the sense of what’s in my head. Occasionally I find it difficult to say what’s on my mind unless I’m asked about it.

I was in the car this morning when on no less than three occasions (my home is just barely 4km away from my office), I encountered jay walkers along the way. These chaps, one lady and two man, seemed to expect the whole world to wait for them.
Then I stopped to think – am I being impatient? Well, I was hurrying to get to
But once again, was I being impatient? Did I end up being one of the ‘ugly’ Singaporeans who would kill for stuffed toys at McDonald’s?
I realized that culturally, we may have been shifting toward that ugly side. As a system, we’ve always been taught to work harder, smarter and faster. That’s the way things go. There is no way in which you will be able to succeed in
I’ve experienced that in the
When impatience sets in, it appears that many different possibilities vanish. I guess that’s useful. From an NLP standpoint, I get to use impatience to focus on what I need to do, if required. I also can avoid it where not useful.
What have you been impatient about, and was it worth it?
I know the countless numbers of times I was impatient about getting my work done – and I got it done. I could say, it was worth it. I also recall the countless numbers of times I was impatient with someone else, and I hurt someone. That, was not worth it.
Ultimately, I could wind down the windscreen and scream at these jaywalkers, but hey – I don’t think it would be worth it because they are human and they certainly have needs that I may not understand at that point of time.
I just found out I had a draft post lingering in my mailbox about the Bali Bomb blasts. I often encourage people to share, but I didn’t think some people would go out there and share misery and death. I was in
Just because it hasn’t happened in
Once again, while I can’t comment on the political and economic chaos some of these people want to create, I trust that the rest of us feel protected and safe. That’s something we should constantly look forward to every day, live our life cleanly with a sense of gratitude.
Gratitude, I think, is missing in the lives of many people. The sensation of gratitude is a very humbling and quiet feeling that resides deep in your gut, and consoles you. If you could help people reach that sense of quiet humility, there would be a lot more peace in the world today.
Every day, wake up and ask yourself: how many things am I grateful for?
And live with the quiet balance in your life.
I saw a group of over 90 people packing in the room, with slightly over 50 percent of them who have come from POE. I’ll be speaking on Internet Marketing tomorrow and covering one of the income streams – Affiliate Marketing.
Have you ever wondered why Singaporeans are the only society in the world that uses packets of tissue papers to reserve their seats at the food courts? What led up to this curious behavior? What do you think tourists might say if they saw this? What if you just went up and sat there in spite of it, claiming your own packet of tissue was on it?
You know my gut instinct? Go collect all the tissue paper packs and start selling them and make a quick buck. I guess everyone would be out buying packets of tissue and selling them on the corner of every food court and make a fortune, maybe.
If this practice was banned, perhaps then they would be forced to use other things for our food court reservation system – like plastic forks and spoons from the food stalls…
I think this will be an excellent Ph.D. research topic for Social Psychology. Any takers? J
Did you know that the winner of the Miss International contest held in
Those of you who are a little more interested in the development of this country – probably would want to look at the applications of NLP in the area of National Development. I mean, seriously, most guys who keep complaining about National Service and the like should really find a new way to turning NLP to their advantage – provide feedback. There’s probably more than what’s listed here, but I think NLP should also be used to create positive change in the community we call home.
There are a number of areas that need attention in
In case you didn’t realize, most parents think differently here than in other countries. A lack of proper parent education means that expectations and family divides will continue unless we have something to say about it. Parents need to learn to be teachers. They need to understand the psychology of child development so that they won’t go around forcing their children to read before they are ready. So that they give up so easily when their children are facing tough times.
As we said, a huge number of NLP applications can be used in the Government. Political savvy has always been modeled, but at the same time, the considerations of the thinking process should be upgraded. Imagine your grassroots leader versed in NLP and being able to mould him or herself to be able to fit his residents’ perceptions of a good leader, then use NLP to model charisma and great thinking skills.
I think that our NLP communication model allows for great applications for those who are interacting with people from other countries and cultures. It’s great to be able to understand the thinking behind different cultures – so if you are headed up to do business in
I find that most people in
I think some people are not willing to contribute to society because of fear of repercussion. But I also think some people are not willing to do it because of incompetence. This includes the lack of the ability to think from different perspectives. As we know, NLP provides a great advantage because a person can adopt different perspectives all at the same time.
Any thoughts or ideas can be sent to me via the form on http://www.stuarttan.com.
